Outstanding Alumni Testimonial: Mr. Jay Jenkins, ‘83
Mr. Jay Jenkins attended Auburn University, finishing with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After graduating from Auburn University, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he engaged in the practice of architecture with the firms of Slater-Paul & Associates and Pierce, Segerberg and Spaeh architects. He has been a partner with Munroe + Jenkins architecture, LLC, for the past 22 years. He is currently serving his first full term on the Anniston City Council.
He has served two terms as the president of the Northeast Alabama Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), served as secretary of the Alabama Chapter of the AIA, ascending through every executive position to become state president in 2006. As past president, he was selected to serve as Legislative chair, advocating issues of architectural concern to state leaders. He was also appointed as first chair for Alabama in the State Government Network, where he was privileged to carry his advocacy efforts to a national level. In 2005, Jay was named as a partner in his architectural firm. In 2009, he was selected by Governor Bob Riley to serve as the architect representative to the State of Alabama Elevator Safety Review Board and has since been reappointed by Governor Robert Bentley.
Mr. Jenkins is active in the Anniston community, participating in Leadership Calhoun County, serving on the boards for Habitat for Humanity and the Anniston City Planning Commission, where his tenure of service exceeds twenty years. He was elected as Elder in First Presbyterian Church and continues to serve on the boards of the Greater Alabama Council Boy Scouts of America and the Alabama Architectural Foundation. He is a proud supporter of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and serves as the architectural advisor to the Anniston Historic Preservation Commission. He coached soccer in Anniston Parks and Recreation through sixteen seasons and now serves as the head girls coach at the Donoho School.
When asked what one piece of advice he would give to Donoho students, he replied, “Savor the moments you have together. Rarely in your life will you have the opportunity to be so close to so many people.”
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Jenkins. He and his wife, Kim, currently reside in Anniston, Alabama. He is the dad of current Donoho students Sonny, ’17 and Sterling, ’19.
