We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Herbert M. Cunningham.
Mr. Cunningham served on the board of directors for The Donoho School from 1980 – 2001. He was Chairman of the Board from 1985 – 1987 and named Director Emeritus in 2002. Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham donated a lower school classroom in 1984. Then in 1989, through his generous giving towards the construction of the brand new middle school, it was named the Herbert Cunningham Middle School.
He graduated from Collinsville High School in 1947 and Jacksonville State College in 1950. He then taught school for ten years. While teaching school, he had various other jobs, including construction. After teaching, he turned construction and homebuilding into his life’s career. After a brief illness, Mr. Cunningham passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at age 94, surrounded by his four children.
Mr. Cunningham was well known for his work ethic, quick wit, and devotion to his family. One of his daughters, Ellen Cunningham Hughes, graduated from The Donoho School in 1982 as well as one of his granddaughters, Alyson Dobbins Mims, in 1998.
