The first grade celebrated the culmination of their writing process with Donoho’s annual Authors’ Tea, Thursday, May 10, 2012.
Each child was presented with the book that he/she had written and illustrated; the school had each story bound into a hardback, keepsake book that will likely be family favorites for years to come. Story titles ranged from My Birthday Party to Barbie Alive to My Trip to the Grand Canyon.
The children brainstormed and completed the work themselves, with only minor assistance from eighth graders Hamilton Gaines, Meredith Howell, and Kelsey Jackson, parent volunteer Dana George, and their teachers Mrs. Kendall Howell and Mrs. Ena Norton.
The children had to complete their work two months ago in order to receive the books from the publisher in time for the tea. When they reviewed their books last week, they discovered how much they have learned in that time. Mrs. Howell overheard them say, “I can’t believe I misspelled spelled that word” and “I should have used an adjective there.”
