Several Donoho teachers representing different grade levels recently attended a two-day onsite professional development workshop that focused on an interdisciplinary approach to teaching. The workshop, which centered around the topic of food safety concepts, contained research-based, highly effective instructional strategies that integrate math, science, social studies, and language arts. All activities were hands-on, including experiments testing various hand-washing techniques using Petri plates, analyzing data using basic statistics and graphing, and researching outbreaks of foodborne illness around the world. This program was developed by the Department of Food Service and Technology at the University of Tennessee.
