Intermediate Students Participate in Hour of Code

At the Donoho Lower School, intermediate students have enjoyed participating in the Hour of Code as a part of the annual Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek), a celebration geared to encourage interest in the field and show that anyone can learn basic coding.

Students watched videos about the background of the event and how to use the Google Blockly app, a coding program. They also discussed uses for coding and how its use help develop your reasoning skills.

Each group spent at least an hour creating code to make an Angry Bird get rid of evil pigs. Students who are interested in learning more about coding may sign up for twenty hours of continued instruction to learn to use Code Avengers.

From the Hour of Code web site:
“Today, we’re surrounded by technology. Many students have their own tablets and phones – and yet, few are learning how computers actually work. Simple computer science activities can help nurture creativity and problem solving skills. By getting a feel for computational thinking early, students will have a foundation for success in any future career path.”

If you would like to learn more about this event and try coding yourself, go to this very informative web site: http://csedweek.org/. You can also register for an extended twenty-hour online lesson on coding. Over ten million people have participated so far.
