First Grade Discovers “Old Fashioned School”

  • The children in First Grade had a fabulous week discovering what life was like in an “Old Fashioned School”. They explored different customs from this bygone era and practiced different learning methods.

Some of the different methods practiced this week included the following:

  1. taking a spelling test on a chalkboard
  2. reading from a McGuffy’s Primer
  3. coming to school in clothing worn in a bygone era
  4. eating a picnic lunch that was not prepackaged but was packed in a basket, tin, box or bandana
  5. making fresh lemonade
  6. making fresh butter to put on crackers

Many different books were perused by the children in order to gain a perception of a former time. They were amused and astounded by the differences.
