Lower school teacher, Donna Plunkett, recently attended two summer workshops sponsored by Legacy: Partners in Environment Education. She and nineteen other educators traveled to Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon Center on July 10-13 to participate in the workshop entitled, Exploring Alabama’s Grand Canyon. The group learned about the wildlife, ecology, geology, botany, water quality, and cultural heritage of this area of the state.
On July 18-20, Mrs. Plunkett traveled to Camp McDowell Environmental Center to attend the Fascinating Flora and Fauna workshop also sponsored by Legacy. The participants discovered the various types of invasive and native plants found in Alabama. They also participated in activities on organic gardening and composting, sustainable agriculture, and outdoor classrooms. Jimmy Stiles from Auburn University presented a session on Alabama herps. Big Dave Hollaway, senior naturalist at Camp McDowell Environmental Center, did a presentation on Alabama’s birds of prey.
