Donoho Stories: Mrs. Brittney Kingery-Garcia
What do you teach at The Donoho School?
I teach 7th grade mathematics, Algebra II, and Advanced Algebraic Concepts.
What do you love about The Donoho School?
I love the feeling of community at the school. There is always an area in which to get involved, whether you are a teacher, student, or parent.
Why do you like teaching at The Donoho School? What motivated you to become a teacher at The Donoho School?
I like to teach at The Donoho School because of the student body. I have encountered many students who are so willing and eager to learn something new. It makes my job so much easier to have students who are excited about learning new mathematical concepts. My college professor, Dr. Jerald Abercrombie, encouraged me to become a teacher at The Donoho School. He thought it would be a good fit for me and my personality.
What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?
Because I am close in age to a lot of my students, I am able to be empathetic in many different areas. The day-to-day hardships of being a teenager are also common hardships of many young adults. Being able to feel what they feel and see what they see allows me to be more empathetic and understanding to my students.
What sets Donoho students apart from students in other schools?
Donoho students are determined. They are always trying to do the “right thing” and make the “right decisions.” The students at The Donoho School are leaders in the school and community who often times end up being leaders in the world after graduating.
The Donoho School tagline is “Discover the Difference.” How do you accomplish this in your role at Donoho?
I believe, as a teacher, my job is to help my students “Discover the Difference.” I am here to steer them in the right direction in learning how to make the correct decisions. Also, in being a teacher, it is my job to mirror “the difference” at The Donoho School. My actions should be a reflection of how I expect my students to conduct themselves.
What do you want your students to gain from having known you?
I want my students to know that I care about what happens in their lives most. I just want my students to walk away with the mindset that “Mrs. Garcia cared about me.”
Mrs. Garcia is from Piedmont and graduated from Jacksonville State University with a B.S. in education. She is married to Mikey Garcia, and they have one son, Tres. She is also raising her two nieces, Kenzleigh and Paisleigh. She enjoys spending time as a family, watching movies, and enjoying life at the river.
